about bamboo

bamboo, a versatile alternative

The popularity of solid bamboo among the general public is growing due to the growing range of household items, in particular, which are highly valued for their strength, durability and hygiene.

More well-known is the modern bamboo as a floor finish. A floor made of bamboo is mainly chosen for wear resistance, shape retention and also for aesthetic reasons. Frequently used as a floor finish for publicly accessible areas where high demands are made on a long (low-maintenance) lifespan.

What is less known, but with a growing share, is that bamboo (viscose) is processed into basic material for textiles. The clothing is experienced as silky soft, moisture regulating and hygienic.

Bamboo is wear and scratch resistant, strong and dimensionally stable. In addition, due to its composition, solid bamboo naturally has a recognizable contemporary aesthetic appearance due to the fine surface design, with the recognizable bamboo knots, usually in the color caramel (caramelized).

bamboo panel composition

The hollow trunk of the giant bamboo (Moso bamboo) is split lengthwise into small slats that are glued after planing and sanding to form a solid single-layer base plate. The base plates are then glued crosswise in layers to form a solid bamboo panel that is very strong in two directions and retains its shape. This is the furniture panel that we use for the furniture.

With vertical gluing (side-pressed bamboo) of the small slats, the surface structure of the base plate becomes finer than when the small slats are glued horizontally (plain-pressed bamboo). The characteristic bamboo knots of the bamboo trunk are slightly more clearly visible in the surface structure of the plain-pressed bamboo.

ecologically sustainable

Solid (solid) bamboo is a very environmentally responsible material. Giant bamboo is a grass that grows to a height of 25 meters in just two months, which is lignified within 5 years, felled and then processed into a high-quality base material. So Atona's furniture is actually made of grass, of very large grass!

No additional water is required for growth. Also, no synthetic pesticides are needed because bamboo naturally produces an anti-bacterial substance. Bamboo also absorbs a lot of CO2 and nitrogen within the short cycles of new growth, growth and felling and is justifiably a sustainable alternative for tropical hardwood, for example.

a fair decision

Compared to tropical hardwood, for example, bamboo is a convincing alternative. This does not alter the fact that the bonding, processing and transport of bamboo also takes up a certain amount of environmental space. In all cases, the life course analysis is especially decisive and this is very positive for bamboo. The bamboo sheet material is our sustainable basis.

Atona designs and makes unique furniture from solid bamboo, in series and on commission.
